Minocycline
Acne
treatments belong to the same class as doxycycline
and tetracycline treatments. In fact, Minocycline is a
derivative of tetracycline antibiotics. Minocycline is taken
orally and it has both an anti-bacterial effect as well as
an anti-inflammatory effect. It reduces the swelling and
redness of acne. It
is used for severe acne, and is quite safe, although the
same cautions apply as for tetracycline with regards possibly
thrush and sensitivity to sun - make sure you take a strong
acidophilus supplement otherwise vitamins that are absorbed
in the bowel (like the b vitamins) may not be; and protect
your skin from the sun.
Whilst
this is generally safe, Minocycline acne treatments
can cause side effects. Two serious, though fairly
rare, side effects are hypersensitivity lupus/hepatitis and
pseudotumor cerebri. The first causes severe joint pains,
and the second, which is an accumulation of fluid around the
brain, causes worsening headaches and vision related
problems.
